Will you be there?

Last Thursday, June 25th, Michael Jackson died.

I remember that, when I was 4 or 5, I felt really scared when the Thriller video was shown on Tv. Those days, in the earlies 80's, Michael Jackson was very famous in Spain, even he came and there were some concerts. But I was absolutely terrified by the video, and each time it was on Tv, I ran to hide behind the curtains in the living room.

Some time after, I learnt to appreciate the music, and I liked his songs, thought he wasn't one of my favourite artist. However I know what he meant to the music of the world, what he meant to the pop and to the way we understand music nowadays.

Here you have one of my favourites songs. Maybe it's not one of the most known, but I fell in love with the music the very first time I heard it, watching "Free Willy" (I was about 12-13)

So, listen to the song, because it worths it, and feel free to read the lyrics here.

Thank you, Michael Jackson, for your music.

Shakespeare

Yesterday was UNESCO International Day of the Book. It was first celebrated in 1995.

Why do why celebrated the Book's Day on 23rd April?

The connection between 23 April and books was first made in 1923 by booksellers in Catalonia, Spain, as a way to honour the author Miguel de Cervantes who died on that day. This became a part of the celebrations of the Saint George's Day (also 23 April) in the region, where it has been traditional since the medieval era for men to give roses to their lovers and since 1925 for the woman to give a book in exchange. Half the yearly sales of books in Catalonia are at this time with over 400,000 sold and exchanged for over 4 million roses.

In 1995, UNESCO decided that the World Book and Copyright Day would be celebrated on this date because of the Catalonian festival and because the date is also the anniversary of the birth and death of William Shakespeare, the death of Inca Garcilaso de la Vega and Josep Pla, the birth of Maurice Druon, Vladimir Nabokov, Manuel Mejía Vallejo and Halldór Laxness.

Although 23 April is often stated as the anniversary of the deaths of both Shakespeare and Cervantes, this is not strictly correct. Ce
rvantes died on 23 April according the Gregorian calendar; however, at this time England still used the Julian calendar. Whilst Shakespeare died on 23 April by the Julian calendar in use in his own country at the time, actually he died ten days after Cervantes, because of the discrepancy between the two date systems. The apparent correspondence of the two dates was a fortunate coincidence for UNESCO.

In "My Beautiful Trouble" we want to honor Shakespeare by doing some research through his most famous quotations and facts in his plays.

By doing click here, you will find the questions. Be brave and try to find out the answers! E.mail me if you want them corrected or if you have any doubt.

Good luck!

Play, go, and do

Last Sunday we went fishing. We had a good time, except when we had to clim the rocks in the beach to reach the best spot in aaaaaall Cannes. I just felt safe when I finally sat in the rocks...

And then I remembered the verbs we use when talking about sports.

We PLAY ball games. We play basketball, soccer, football, tennis, even rugby, although the ball has not exactly a ball's shape.

Then, we GO sports ending in -ing. We go swimming, running, sailing, skiing...

And we DO judo, karate and canoeing.

Well, having in mind that I hate sports, I don't mind going fishing next weekend!
